Archeologists believe that the earliest inhabitants of Kailua, Hawaii were present in this location 1,500 years prior. People can be certain that these early inhabitants spent a great deal of their time fishing since their home had two lagoons nearby, from which the city derives its name and the rest of the ocean to engage in this activity. They would have been unable to obtain their food in any other way because according to the archeologists, the land and climate was not suitable for farming.
Kailua's status was upgraded during the 16th century when it became the seat of the high chief. Formerly, this honor belonged to the city of Waikiki but King Kakuhihewa and several kings afterward took their rightful hereditary place in the city of Kailua.
Several people have taken notice of Kailua's beach. So much is thought of its beach that many people who have visited often cite it as being Hawaii's best. It received this honor officially when Dr. Stephen Leatherman declared that it deserved to be named the best beach, not just in Hawaii but in the entire United States.
Kailua has been the beautiful backdrop for several movies and television shows, including Lost, Hawaii Five-O and Magnum P.I. but this is not the only reason people of distinction come to this city. Kailua also has one very famous regular visitor in the President of the United States Barack Obama. This area is such a favorite of the current president that he has taken his winter vacations to the city for three years in a row. He even spent his 2008 summer vacation in Kailua.
Over time, the population has continued to grow in Kailua. In the 1940s, the census could not even count 3,000 people although it came close. The 2010 census demonstrated that 38,635 people lived in Kailua at the time.
